Country: Israel
Produced by: EvanskyVision

Among the questions tackled by X-Settlement:
  • Do the settlers see themselves as perpetrators or victims?
  • How much is the whole of Israeli society responsible for the current settler crisis?
  • What attaches people to a land or a house?
  • What will happen next?
  • What has Israel gained or lost with this settlement project?
  • "The Sea knows no laws, no governments, no rights and no wrongs and all men are reduced to equals by it.": the words of a fishermen from Gaza.

Filmed above and below water over a seven year period (continuing the filming of Area K, BBC world, 2001) this film documents the life of Jewish fishermen from the settlement of Dugit contrasted with a Palestinian fishing clan from the neighboring refugee camp Shahti.

They used to work the sea together in the late nineties when peace was still at the top of the agenda, then a bloody war broke out (2001-2004). The fishing partnership ended. Surprisingly the war did good for the settlement of Dugit which evolved from a mobile home community to a luxurious 400 square meter villas with swimming pools – but not for long.

Now we are shooting the final chapter - X-Settlement - the Israeli withdrawal of all Jewish settlements in the Gaza strip; a truly historical moment in the Israeli/Palestinian territorial conflict. The film will follow our four characters through this extremely tense and dramatic period of disengagement. No one knows what their future holds; the tension will grow as the date for withdrawal approaches.

The team behind the award-winning documentary Area K, director Nadav Harel and producer Ben Evansky, have already accumulated vast amounts of invaluable footage and key research on the people and history of the settlement. Beginning in the era of Oslo, 1997, and throughout the al-Aqsa Intifada, the team behind Area K has played witness to the striking evolution of Dugit. Their access and familiarity to the characters and politics of the Gaza Region will give audiences a rare glimpse into the construction and now deconstruction of the young settlement.
